It's All In The Dew Point!

Today, both the heat and the humidity are making it feel like Florida outside. We look at the "Dew Point" temperature and how we can determine just how humid it feels.

Temperatures reached the lower 90s yesterday, topping off at 93º locally.  It certainly was hot, but it was a manageable heat.  The humidity was noticable, but it wasn't unbearable.

During the summer, we reference the dew point temperature often.  The dew point serves a number of purposes; during this time of year, we can determine just how humid it will feel to us based on the dew point.  When the dew point temperature is in the 50s, it doesn't typically feel too humid.  Once the dew point reaches 60º, some humidity is noticable; by the mid 60s it is humid, and once the dew point reaches 70º it is downright oppressive.  It is rare to have dew points above 70º.

This morning, the dew point was in the 71º to 73º range!  This proves the airmass overhead is truly tropical.  At midday, the dew point has fallen slightly (about 70º), but it is still oppressively humid outside.
