Lost Dogs and How To Find Them

For the Love of a DOG! If you have ever loved a dog, owned a dog or lost a dog, you need to know this information for future reference.

If you have never had the misfortune of losing a dog you are very lucky. Misplacing a set of keys or your glasses may be an inconvenience but when your family pet just up and disappears, what do you do? First, do not panic! Most times a dog is very close-by but what you do next can make the difference of getting him back quickly and safely.

Follow these tips: Call your animal control officer, Contact local shelters, Do a foot and car search of your entire neighborhood, enlist as many friends as possible to help, Post to lost & found on Craigslist, Post to Granite State Dog Recovery on Facebook, Post to your own Facebook wall, make sure your pet's Microchip is registered and locate a photo of your dog. If you have not located him within four hours, make up a simple flyer and post them all over the neighborhood. A thousand eyes is much better than a couple of searchers in determining what direction your dog is travelling.

Your flyer should be simple: LOST DOG - top line, Picture under that, Do not chase under the photo,  YOUR PHONE number in bold letters so people can read from the car.  Print on neon colored paper, insert into a plastic sleeve with opening on the bottom to protect it from the rain and staple the flyers to telephone poles in highly visable areas. (Remember this is a temporary tool. You must remove all flyers once your dog has been recovered)

Remember these tips too: Dogs tend to travel where there is food. If it is trash day, look for him very early in the morning (3 to 7 a.m.), If he is a very shy dog: Look for him under porches, sheds, heavy shrubs.

Above all else do not assume the dog will come home on his own. Keep searching. Do not give up. Our group (Granite State Dog Recovery) has successfully brought home dogs after being out on their own for over a year! GSDR is a non profit all volunteer group dedicated to reuniting lost dogs with their families. Unlike other for profit groups ~We do not charge for our services.
