Voting is a Privilege? or a Hassle? Or is Only Important if I get Something out of it?

Voting is a privilege. Yes, we have all heard that before, and it sounds like a cliche, but it is true.

Innumerable people around the world wish they had this right, yet few Salem voters turn out for non-presidential elections and deliberative sessions leaving the power in the hands of a few. I admit that I have been one of those people, but I feel differently this year because of a warrant that had a direct impact on me.

Anyone who travels on Pond Street knows that passing the warrant to repair the road is vital.

There have been no significant repairs in 20 years. So I went to a selectmen's meeting and the deliberative session and here I am writing about it.  

So self-interest can bring people out, but is there anything else we can do?  I admire the people who have been committed to participating in the democratic process, and I would love to know what inspires them to take the time.  

So a question for all of us.  What can we do to encourage more people to take advantage of the privilege we have?

Oh...and vote for the Pond Street warrant.  Please!
