What Happened To The Idea Of A Salem Dog Park?

Does Salem have the land for a dog park? If so, where and when is it going to be built? Who can help? What needs to be done?

I have two dogs, both greyhounds, and while the usual thoughts about them needing a ton of exercise are not true, the fact that they like to run is. We occasionally trek to the Derry Dog Park, which is lovely, and once in a great while, we'll go to Lowell or Hampstead, though both of these are further away. Wouldn't it be nice to have a dog park in Salem?

A year or so ago, I could have sworn that I had heard that some land had been purchased and set aside for the Salem Dog Park. What ever happened to that? Has anything been done for getting that running? I would be thrilled to step up to help organizers work on it, if I knew where it was and what could be done.

These thoughts occur to me as I look for safe places in Salem to let my dogs stretch their legs, and frankly, there aren't any. Most places with gates don't allow dogs, and even if you find one that does, well, let's just say that my male dog knows doors and gates well enough to get most gates open. We like the Derry Dog Park for its 'airlock' system, and the latches that are greyhound proof. Whither is a problem solver, and while he doesn't look like he is all that bright, there are obviously some good thoughts going through his head. He has figured out more than a few gates in his time.

So what are people's thoughts on this dilema? IS there land set aside and is there a committee for a dog park here in Salem? If so, let me know, because I have met more than one dog owner who lives here who would love to not have to drive a half an hour or more just to watch their dog(s) frolic off leash. And if not, what needs to be done to get the ball rolling? I'm more than willing to help out for this cause, and if a bake sale or a committee yard sale is in the planning, then I'm in.
