What’s a Girl To Do?

Do you color your hair? Have you ever wondered just what is in that stinky goop they slather all over your head to make you look beautiful? You may want to think twice.

Vanity.  One of the seven deadly sins.  If that’s really the case then I guess I have sinned frequently!

I’d like to take a poll to see how many women out there still have their natural hair color! At the present time, I don’t…at least not quite yet.

That brings me to my current dilemma.  As I continue my life’s research on living eco-friendly I am astounded at the number of toxins we use everyday just on our bodies.

At the moment, my roots are showing…a lot!  So I started to research hair dyes and the chemicals they are made from.  No surprise really. I mean seriously, if you have ever had your hair colored, you know how nasty that stuff can smell!

Here’s what I found. Octynoic acid: A chemical cosmetic and food additive also found in nail polish; Formaldehyde: The very same chemical used to preserve cadavers; Ammonia: A colorless gas with a pungent odor. Those are just some of the nasty things in hair dyes.

Most of these chemicals can cause cancer and do nasty things to your liver. And they put this stuff directly on your head! Then leave it there for 20 minutes or so to process! How many brain cells have I lost in my years of coloring?

OK! I give up! So to color or not to color – that is the question.

There is good news! I found that there are a number of “green” (obviously not the color) hair dyes I can use if I want to cover up my grays!  Now I just need to find out which ones are the best and see if my salon is willing to try them out on me.  I am too chicken to try it myself. I did have that one experience where my hair turned a nice shade of orange when I was younger!

So if you see me out and about on the streets and my hair is looking a bit more gray, feel free to comment. For now, I am going to wear my gray proudly until I can find a safe, non-toxic way to cover them up!

In my search for answers I did find that most salons are now offering hair color lines that exclude the harmful chemicals.  You see, they are not too keen on using all those chemicals either!  All you have to do is ask.  The best salons will point you in the right direction!  Save your head – go chemical free color or go gray!
