One in 330 children will be diagnosed with cancer prior to the age of 20. While rare in comparison to cancer in adults, each year in NH approximately 70 families hear the words “Your child has cancer.” For those families, life is never, ever, the same. Despite advances in treatment, childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children. Leukemia remains the most commonly diagnosed form of pediatric cancer, followed by brain tumors. Treatment protocols can be lengthy, up to 3 years, causing great stress upon and increased expenses for families. Of those children diagnosed with cancer, 25 percent will lose their battle within 5 years of diagnosis. Pediatric cancer survivors face chronic illnesses as adults - with 2/3 reporting at least one chronic health condition, and 1/4 living with a severe chronic health condition
