Teamsters Local 25 Golf Tournament Provides College Scholarships
Teen who earned Local 25 scholarship leads winning team at Windham Country Club to help future scholarship recipients
(Windham, NH) – The 26th annual Teamsters Local 25 Charity Golf Tournament was held at Windham Country Club. This tournament is the primary fundraiser for the Teamsters Local 25 Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships each year to children of Teamster members and retirees as a way to help the next generation of leaders achieve their academic and career goals. The winning team was led by 18 year old Edward Welch, Jr. of Brockton, the son of a Local 25 member who earned a Local 25 scholarship this year. Welch graduated Brockton High School and is attending the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He is the son of Edward Welch, Sr., a Teamsters Local 25 member who works at Global Experience Specialists. Teamsters Local 25 is headquartered in Charlestown, a neighborhood of Boston.
"College planning is an exciting time, but it can also be scary to think about the financial burdens that accompany it, and this scholarship helps to ease the financial burden for my family and me," said recipient Edward Welch, attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy this fall. "My dad has been a member of Local 25 for 25 years; I've grown up hearing nothing but stories of brotherhood and about how the union is always helping others, but to actually benefit from this generosity is pretty special and I am very grateful."
Scholarship recipients must be children or grandchildren of Local 25 members and are required to submit a personal essay. A Scholarship Committee and Bunker Hill Community College review the essay along with the student's SAT scores and high school transcript. The golf tournament, held each year at the scenic Windham Country Club in Windham, New Hampshire, is organized and run Teamsters Local 25 volunteers.
"The tournament is a day of friendly competition for our participants but the real winners are our student scholarship recipients, as 100% of proceeds from this tournament support the Teamsters Local 25 Scholarship Program, which awarded $60,000 this spring to Local 25 families attending college. This year was extra special as the foursome that won the tournament included Ed Welch, Jr., who received a Local 25 scholarship this past May and is a freshman at Massachusetts Maritime Academy."
Teamsters Local 25 provided college scholarships to 30 high school students this year. Governor Charlie Baker joined President O'Brien in presenting the scholarships during the annual award ceremony held at the historic Local 25 union hall in Charlestown. Teamsters Local 25 is the largest Teamsters Union in New England, representing more than 12,000 workers.
