Author Eric Jay Dolin to discuss “The Wreck of the Mentor” at Wolfeboro Library July 30
Eric Jay Dolin will visit the Wolfeboro Public Library on Thursday, July 30 at 6pm for an author talk and book signing. He will be discussing his latest book, “The Wreck of the Mentor: A True Story of Death, Despair, and Deliverance in the Age of Sail.” “The Wreck of the Mentor,” published in June, has made both the New York Times and Bostone Globe best-seller lists.
Dolin is the bestselling author of seventeen books, including “Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America;” “A Furious Sky: The Five-Hundred-Year History of America’s Hurricanes;” “Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America’s Most Notorious Pirates;” and “Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution.” Dolin's books have won many awards including the John Lyman Award for U.S. Maritime History; Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award; National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Book Award for Adult Nonfiction; Samuel Eliot Morison Book Award for Naval Literature; L. Byrne Waterman Book Award for Outstanding Contributions to Research and Pedagogy in the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; James P. Hanlan Book Award; and the Outdoor Writers Association of America Book Award. Many of his books have been chosen as “must reads” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Other honors include being chosen as a finalist for the Kirkus Prize, and as one of the best books of the year by The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Kirkus Reviews, the Library Journal, and Booklist. Dolin lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts, with his family.

Linda Magoon, author of “Live Free and Hike: Finding Grace on 48 Summits” will talk about her book at the Wolfeboro Public Library, 259 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 6:00 pm, where she will share her inspiring journey of resilience, self-discovery, and healing. 
Newly liberated after ending her toxic 25-year marriage to a controlling husband, Linda gradually regained her independence and rediscovered her love of hiking in the White Mountains. She set a goal to climb all 48 of New Hampshire’s 4,000-foot and higher peaks. But less than a year later, after shocking allegations and a surprise arrest of her ex-husband, Magoon found herself in a downward spiral as she processed the guilt, shame, and sadness of being married to someone so infamous. The book explores how a middle-aged woman, with little high summit experience, found solace and strength on the rugged trails to the 4,000-foot peaks. 
“I discovered the ‘the list’ by accident, after hiking Mt. Moosilauke. It was shortly after my divorce, and even though I was in my mid-50’s, I thought it would be a good way to stay active and to have a goal to focus on,” Magoon shared. “I had no idea how transformative walking in nature could be, helping me through the darkest time of my life. Having a good therapist and life coach helped, too.” Kirkus Reviews notes, “Linda’s dry wit, candor, and perseverance will win many readers over.”
