Leah Dearborn, Associate Director of the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire will present her program “WACs, WASPs and Rosies: The Women Who Served New Hampshire During World War II” on Wednesday, September 16 at 6pm at the Wolfeboro Public Library. The program is free and open to all.
More than 350,000 American women served in uniform during World War II, both at home and abroad, while countless others supported the war effort as civilians. In New Hampshire, women stepped forward to serve in the WACs, the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Women’s Reserves, the Women Airforce Service Pilots and the Army and Navy Nurse Corps. Across the nation, “Rosies” filled factories and shipyards, taking on jobs once reserved for men. This presentation highlights the remarkable stories of New Hampshire women such as Sister Teresa of Nashua, who trained as a WASP before becoming a Carmelite nun, and Doris Moore of Portsmouth, a member of the “Six Triple Eight,” an all-Black, all-female battalion stationed in Europe during the final days of the war. In Dearborn’s presentation, the audience will discover the courage, resilience and determination of the women who helped shape victory on the home front and beyond.
