TRENTON, NJ — A New Jersey state senator is proposing a $500 gas tax rebate as a way to ease mounting anger and frustration over the increasing price of gasoline, according to a report.

The rebate was proposed by Sen. Edward Durr, a truck driver who unexpectedly defeated Democrat Steve Sweeney last November, News 12 reported. Durr said the state should use tax revenue to offset the cost of gasoline for New Jersey residents.

"We overtaxed $4.5 billion, so it's their money anyway," Durr said, according to News 12. "It's not like I'm giving them something. They’re getting back their money."

Durr also said a Democrat-backed plan to pause the state gas tax for 60 days is "not realistic." The plan is one of several announced by lawmakers in recent days intended to fight skyrocketing fuel costs.

When asked, Gov. Phil Murphy’s office told News 12 the governor does not comment on pending legislation.
