NEW JERSEY — Macy’s is trying something new in New Jersey, and announced two of its “smaller format” locations will open up next year in vacant Bed Bath and Beyond stores.

Welco Realty, Inc. signed store leases at Centerton Square in Mt. Laurel, and at Interstate Shopping Center in Ramsey, according to an announcement on Monday.

The well-known department store began testing these smaller-format locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area back in 2020. These smaller stores in off-mall shopping centers are designed to provide a “seamless experience with well-known market brands, Macy’s private brands, convenient services, local events and the latest trends, all within an easy-to-shop environment,” the company said earlier this year.

Macy’s currently has two dozen stores in New Jersey, most of which are in a shopping mall or center.

The Mt. Laurel store is planned to be 30,200 square feet and will join other major anchors such as Wegman’s, Target, Costco, TJMaxx, and DSW, according to Welco.

In Ramsey, the 25,000-square-foot store at Interstate Shopping Center will join other retailers ShopRite, DSW, Burlington, Michael’s, and Old Navy. Both are expected to open sometime in 2024, Welco Realty said.

“We are very excited about bringing the Macy’s brand to both shopping centers and the Mt. Laurel and the Ramsey community,” said Jerry Welkis, President of Welco.

The company plans to open up 30 of the small-format locations nationwide through the fall of 2025 to meet evolving customer needs, said Macy’s Inc. COO and CFO, Adrian Mitchell.

“The stores offer a highly-curated and localized assortment of Macy’s private brands, sought-after market brands, on-trend beauty, luxury favorites, and much more,” he said in an October announcement.

The small-format stores are also designed to allow customers to connect with store staff digitally, and speed up checkout time, he said.
