A massive winter storm that hovered over the area most of Sunday blanketed much of New Jersey with at least 6 inches of snow, with two towns reporting 17 inches by the end of the event.

The areas with the highest totals were in the northwestern part of New Jersey, the National Weather Service reported.

Sussex County had the highest totals in the state, with more than a foot of snow, topped by 17 inches in Branchville and Stockholm and 16 in Newton.

Bergen and Morris counties also had a foot or more of snow, with Green Pond in Morris County reporting 16.4 inches and Tenafly in Bergen County reporting 16.3 inches.

Double-digit totals were reported in most of the state, with the southern counties — Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic and Gloucester reporting the lowest totals in evening counts. Some areas received more freezing rain than others, leaving snow topped with a quarter-inch of ice.
