NEW JERSEY — Grab your umbrella, and maybe even your snow shovel — wet weekend weather could bring several inches of snow to parts of New Jersey today while others will see widespread rain.

A storm is coming east from the Midwest, and is likely to turn into a wintry mix and snow for some areas of the state, while others will see rain. Precipitation will begin moving into New Jersey late Friday morning with "widespread rain" by the afternoon, said the National Weather Service.

The storm "will behave like a spring system," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg, with low elevations likely to have wet roads, even at night, and snow-covered roads in higher elevations.

The storm will "struggle with warmer air" as it pushes east, Lundberg added. The storm will fall near the heavily traveled I-80, I-84, and I-86 corridors of the Northeast, he said.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Warren, Morris, and Sussex counties from 1 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday. Total snow accumulations are forecast between three and five inches.

There is also one in place for parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties from 6 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday. These counties could see three to five inches of accumulation, with higher amounts on higher elevations.

The NWS cancelled the Winter Weather Advisory in Somerset and Hunterdon counties because they will see about an inch, forecasters said in their Friday morning update.

For those not getting snow, the NWS said "1/2 to 3/4 inch of rain is expected for southeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey." There was some chance of snow south of the I-95 corridor, but that has dissipated according to the NWS.

Looking further ahead —minor coastal flooding is also possible with the high tide cycle along the NJ ocean coasts on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, said the NWS.

And, a gale watch is in effect for the Atlantic coastal waters on Saturday. Wind gusts of 35 to 40 kt are expected, with seas seven to eleven feet.

Next week, a second storm may develop into a potent nor'easter for the region, which forecasters are also tracking.
