500 Layoffs At Restaurant Company As Job Cuts Surge In NJ

September has brought more layoff announcements, with more than 1,000 job cuts across multiple industries in New Jersey, including more than 500 coming from the restaurant service Wonder.

Wonder, the food delivery and takeout company that hass partnered with multiple high end restaurant companies and chefs including Bobby Flay, Michael Symon and more, offers a variety of options from barbecue to steak to poke and pizza and has outlets across New Jersey.

The company is cutting 533 positions, with the layoffs to be completed by Jan. 8, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state on Tuesday.

The company describes itself as a "vertically integrated food technology platform built to make great food more accessible."

"Through Infinite Kitchen, our advanced food robotics platform, we are redefining long-accepted industry constraints," the company says. "This system enables our vision to be the world's first choice for every meal by offering the widest variety at unbeaten quality and value—bringing chef-inspired originals, beloved restaurant favorites, prepared foods, and even in-home meal kits together in a single, integrated platform."

Wonder's layoff announcement comes as the company just agreed to a $425 million partnership with DoorDash that aims to expand Wonder's reach on college campuses.

In addition to the Wonder cuts, seven other companies have announced layoffs since the beginning of September.

Banker Steel, a structural steel construction company, is cutting 115 positions at its South Plainfield location, with the layoffs to be completed by mid-December.

Fiserv Solutions, the banking and payment technology company, eliminated 98 positions in its Berkeley Heights location, as of Sept. 11.

There are 91 jobs being cut at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center, with the layoffs to be completed by Christmas.

Educational Testing Service in Princeton is cutting 62 jobs, with layoff dates of Nov. 9 and Dec. 31.

Barrette Outdoor Living, which makes fencing, decking, and other outdoor living space products, is eliminating 59 positions at its Egg Harbor City location on Dec. 13 and 14.

Pharmaceutical giant Merck is eliminating 54 positions, with layoffs in mid-December and Jan. 4. It's the second layoff announced by the company this year, following an 88-job cut in June.

UBS, the financial services company, is cutting 41 positions in its Weehawken office in late November.

The September layoffs so far, 1,053 in total, follow a summer where nearly 4,500 jobs were cut across the state. There have been 14,033 layoffs announced so far in 2026 in New Jersey.
