Top-Paying School Districts: See Where NJ Administrators Make The Most
The median salary for New Jersey administrators was $137,219 for 2022-23, up from $133,209 in 2021-22, according to state data.
NEW JERSEY — It is increasingly common for school administrators in New Jersey to make nearly $150,000, and a number of districts around the state pay median salaries higher than that amount to their administrators.
Data from the state Taxpayer’s Guide to Education Spending includes median administrator salaries for all of New Jersey’s public school districts, including charter and vocational schools.
That includes superintendents, principals and assistant principals, curriculum directors and other employees in administrative positions within Garden State schools.

Gray Charter School in Essex paid its administrators the most in the 2022-23 school year, state data shows: A median amount of $203,768, which is an increase from $165,000 in the 2021-22 school year.
There are 85 districts and charter schools, out of more than 660 statewide, whose median administrative salaries were $150,000 or more for 2022-23, according to the data.

Statewide, the median administrator's salary was $137,219 in 2022-23, up from $133,209 in 2021-22, with a ratio of 140.3 students per administrator in '22-23.
The chart below is sorted by county, and includes information on the ratio of students to administrator and the grade levels/enrollment of the district. N.R. means the data was not reported to the state.
