Bradley Food Pantry Goes Green

The Bradley Food Pantry is collecting 3000 reusable cloth bags (new or used) for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meal distributions.

The Bradley Food Pantry has launched its second annual community campaign to collect reusable (cloth) shopping bags. This year’s goal is to collect 3000 reusable bags – new or used, for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meal distributions. On November 17, dozens of volunteers will distribute turkeys and these sturdy bags filled to the brim with all the trimmings to several hundred families registered with the Pantry who have signed up in advance.

Individuals, organizations, religious institutions and local businesses, such as markets and banks, are encouraged to donate reusable bags to support the Pantry’s ongoing effort to eliminate using plastic and brown paper bags for food distribution. Since the campaign began last year, 40% of Pantry clients regularly bring reusable cloth bags with them every time they come for food. As a result, they are automatically entered into a monthly drawing for a small gift card.

Currently, the Pantry must buy paper bags that can’t be recycled and end up in the garbage. According to Pantry Director Linda Curtiss, “We want to put those thousands of dollars to much better use by purchasing extra food to fill our shelves while saving trees at the same time.”
