A fatal police-involved shooting happened overnight in Asbury Park, according to the Office of Attorney General.

The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Task Force is conducting an investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred tonight on 7th Avenue in Asbury Park, according to the OAG.

Police shot and killed a person at the Asbury Inn after responding to a report late Tuesday, according to nj.com. Police responded to a report of an emotionally disturbed person.

The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at the hotel on the 300 block of 7th Avenue when at least one officer fired several shots. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to abc7ny.com. The person was shot multiple times.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to the law enacted in January 2019, Senate Bill 1036. The law requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer.
