The Asbury Park Press rewarded a student by publishing her opinion piece on banning cell phones in class.

The Asbury Park Press recently rewarded a Point Pleasant Borough High School student by publishing her opinion piece on banning cell phones in class.

Isabella Lopez wrote about how math class is "the epitome of high school," where cell phone use is rampant.

"To the left, the popular girls sit giggling over the latest gossip," she wrote. "The popular boys lounge with their hoods up on the right side of the room, dreaming of shooting hoops in sweaty gym clothes.

"In the back of the room sit the quiet kids whose intelligence you question because they never ask for help but they never boast either," she wrote. "And in the front row, the kids eager to learn scribble away in their notebooks with their faces an inch above the paper as if the closer they get, the more information they retain."

A common thread? Cell phones on their desks.
