NJ Will Pay Up To $4K For Your Electric Vehicle: Gov. Murphy

New Jersey could help pay for your purchased or leased electric vehicle, Gov. Murphy said this week. Here's what that means for you:

ASBURY PARK, NJ - If you’re in the market for an electric vehicle, New Jersey could help you pay for it.

During a Monday announcement in Asbury Park, Gov. Phil Murphy pledged incentives of up to $4,000 for state residents to buy or lease eligible new, zero-emission electric vehicles, as well as an extra $250 to reduce the costs associated with adding charging stations to homes.

“With so much at stake amid the mounting climate crisis, it is imperative that we all do our part not just as New Jerseyans, but as global citizens, to help mitigate the impacts of climate change,” Murphy said in a statement. “We remain determined to meet our bold clean energy goals and are confident that thousands more New Jerseyans will take advantage of a program that will continue to bear considerable economic and environmental benefits.”

Up to $4,000 will be offered for electric vehicles priced under $45,000; incentives of up to $2,000 will be offered for vehicles with an MSRP between $45,000 and $50,000, Murphy’s office said.

The $250 incentives for electric vehicle charging stations can be combined with the already existing utility programs, which may cover installation costs, the office added.

The incentive program begins July 25 and will be applied at point-of-sale. The program is limited to New Jersey residents.

“[The state] has awarded nearly $10 million for 1,970 EV charging stations with 3,229 plugs on our corridors, and in our communities,” New Jersey Commissioner of Environmental Protection Shawn M. LaTourette said in a statement. “These charging stations will provide an extensive network of charging opportunities to support cars purchased under the Charge Up NJ program, further enhancing the Murphy Administration’s commitment to electrify our transportation sector, reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that exacerbate climate change, and put the state even closer to its 100 percent clean energy goals.”

The announcement comes as part of the state’s Charge Up New Jersey program, which was included in EV legislation signed into law in 2020 by Murphy. Under the law, the state is set to provide at least $30 million in annual incentives for the Charge Up program over a ten-year period.

Over 13,000 electric vehicles were already purchased or leased in the last 2 years through the incentive, Murphy said.

This year, the state has budgeted $35 million for the Charge Up Program, $5.5 million for the residential charger program, $10 million for Clean Fleet government EV vehicles ($4 million of which is dedicated to local government), $6 million for EV tourism and $4 million for electric vehicle chargers in multi-unit housing. Up to $6,000 in incentives for adding EV chargers to multi-unit developments are available; those applications are due June 2, 2023.
