Barnegat To Hold 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

BARNEGAT, NJ — Barnegat will hold a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at 8 a.m. in the parking lot outside Town Hall, the Township Committee announced during their latest meeting.

According to Deputy Mayor Fred Rubenstein, the ceremony will include several speakers with direct ties to that day and its aftermath.

“We’re going to have some speakers, the likes of which will take you back there because everybody that will speak was there,” he said.

Rubenstein said one guest speaker will be General Lawrence Thomas.

“He was the first Air Force Reserve pilot to be made a general by the Congress, and that’s General Lawrence Thomas, who flew an F-16 fighter jet over Manhattan after the bombing,” he said.

Other scheduled speakers, according to the remarks, include retired Barnegat police officer Steve Tater, Bill Cox and “a representative of the American Legion.” Rubenstein, himself a survivor of the attacks, also said he would speak during the ceremony.

“57,000 people, more than just close to double the amount of people living in our town have contracted cancer or other diseases,” Rubenstein said. “Some are blessed, and they survived. Others did not.”

The ceremony will be held in the Barnegat Town Hall parking lot at 8 a.m. on Sept. 11. If the weather is bad, it will be held inside the adjacent recreation center.
