Barnegat Light Murder Victim Was FDNY Fireman, 9-11 Responder

Services for Richard P. Doody Jr. will be held on Monday and Tuesday in Staten Island.

Funeral services for Richard P. Doody, a retired Fire Department of New York lieutenant found murdered in his Barnegat Light home last week, will be held on Tuesday in the Tottenvile section of Staten Island, according to the Staten Island Advance.

Doody, 60, had a 29-year career with the FDNY and was assigned to Engine Co. 239 and Ladder Co. 105 in Brooklyn. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2001, then went to the Fire Academy at Randall’s Island and taught probationary firefighters.

Doody spent several weeks at Ground Zero, working on “the pile,” before being assigned to the Ceremonial Unit. He later went to Ladder Co. 84 in Huguenot and retired from that post in 2011.

Doody founded the “9-11 Sticker Fund,” and was responsible for the design, fabrication and distribution of the well-known red and white “FDNY 9-11-01, All Gave Some, Some Gave All” stickers. Proceeds from their sale were donated to the FDNY Elsasser Fund for the widows and children of fallen firefighters.

Doody was found dead in his Central Avenue home in Barnegat Light last Monday. He had head trauma and his throat was cut. Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office arrested Conrad Sipa, 52, Homelands Drive, Colts Neck, late last week. Sipa is being held in the Ocean County Jail in lieu of $1 million cash bail.
