Barnegat Students Perform Well on State Tests
Director of Curriculum notes gains and losses in some areas, but he said, the district is working on addressing all areas where students may need extra help.

State testing scores show that Barnegat High School seniors are above the average proficiency levels for both the state and comparable districts in both mathematics and the language component.
The HSPA test is given to eleventh grade students in the state, as well as new twelfth grade students and students who failed the test the previous year.
Anthony Scotto, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, delivered a presentation on the HSPA Assessment Scores, and other standardized test results, at the Board of Education meeting held yesterday.

If a student falls below the line of proficiency, Barnegat officials offer additional help, Scotto said.
He also reviewed scores for other grade levels, which showed similar results, and increases in certain years in performance relating to languages and mathematics.
However, he said, there were some declines, notably about a 16% decline in mathematic scores relating to the seventh graders (who are now in eight grade). He said "there are many ways to interpret these numbers, but the important thing is that we have some areas we need to work on, and althought we are still above the state average, we will take this information and work on those areas to help our students."
Scotto reported that the state has adopted a new benchmark system this year that will allow enable more achievable goals that is an improvement, he said, over the previous benchmark to have 100 percent proficiency by 2013.
