Barnegat Township Committee Introduces Municipal Budget

Increase in tax rate attributed to lower property values

The Barnegat Township Committee introduced A 2011-12 municipal budget Friday that carries a tentative increase in the municipal tax rate of 0.120 cents.

None of the five committee members said they were happy with the budget as it stands.

The vote was 4-1 with Township Committeeman Leonard Morano voting no. The four remaining committee members voted yes to introduce the budget but with reservations.

Township Administrator David Breeden attributed the increase to a decrease in property values  due to a 2010 reassessment. Such a reduction in property values lowers the amount of funds the township will take in this year.

Check back with Barnegat Patch for a full story on the budget and comments from State Senator Christopher J. Connors, who filled in as township attorney at this afternoon's meeting.
