Beach Haven Swimming Prohibited Sunday Due To Strong Rip Currents

The waves are 4 to 6 feet tall, officials said.

Update: swimming was also prohibited Sunday at Surf City ocean beaches.

BEACH HAVEN, NJ — Officials prohibited swimming in Beach Haven beaches on Sunday because of dangerous conditions. Beach Haven Beach Patrol Chief Mike Lawrence said waves of 4 to 6 feet were detected.

Strong rip currents will affect the entire Jersey Shore on Sunday, the National Weather Service announced. The rip currents will be dangerous to anyone who enters the surf, the NWS said. The warning remains in effect through this evening.

Beach Haven officials will continue evaluating the situation before deciding when people can swim again, Lawrence said.

"Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."
