UPDATED: Check out the attached PDF for graphic representation of some of the data discussed below.

Within many residents comments and out of the pocket books  are the payment of property taxes and how this is either going up, down or distributed. I would like to propose an exchange of ideas that could focus on what can be trended over a 5 year period regarding our local property tax. Then intention is not to give + or - to any group or individuals but to place the data out for public consumption and everyone can draw their own conclusions positive or negative.

Data that I have seen available to the public (at a high level) since 2000, but I would suggest we collect and trend starting in 2007 i.e. a rolling 5 years with 5-7 data points. KISS principle.

  • General Tax rates. Each year, for example 2006 = 3.672, 2007 = 1.594 (reassessment year), 2008 = 1.631
  • Breakdown of General Tax Rate. Each office of what they receive, for example, Library = $.037, County = $.0317, District School = $1.284
  • Assessed Value by Classification. Class 2 (residential) = $1,938,444,700 ... if divided by # of residences = avg assessed value

While everyone's personal property tax cost is important, it is also equal we need to look at the overall picture. If individuals are  concerned for their own value and tax then there is a process for an  appeal.

Would appreciate constructive support in understanding if this can be a worth while endeavor. I will place the data in Excel and transfer over to various graphs in Power point over time with posting on Patch.

If there are some analytical expert or excel wizards out there, your assistance is appreciated.
