Pizza Delete...May 16 Mirage Softball Report

Mirage looses a tough one in Waretown.

The Bombers traveled to Waretown in hopes of getting one step closer to the long awaited pizza party.

Your line-up: John Vaccarello, John Arena, Jay Lomberk, Marty Lisella, Rich Zaccagna, Robin Greenwald, Ben Lo Scalzo, Andy Gish, Pat Pipi, Lou Traficante, Artie Posillipo, Bill Farmer and Mike Pappas.

Watching from a distance, we noticed their gait was minus the usual swagger that we have grown accustomed. Not exactly sure but something was missing.

Expect to win!Play to win! Act to win! Do only things that create winning. That is our usual stance when we enter a stadium, again, today something was missing. There was a slight breeze and it was blowing in, this was going to be a tight low scoring game.

Our fielding was a little sloppy today but we hung tough and trailed only 3-2 as we entered the final inning.

"Come on guys, let's hold 'em and we will win it in our half," says Rich. A two out second and third wind-blown double plates two runs for Greenbrier and we now trail 5-2 as we step up to our last at bat.

Pat leads off with a double to right, Lou singles and Artie singles, Skip singles and it is now 5-3 bases loaded and nobody out. "Smell the pizza boys." John A hits a one hop smash to third for a force out...run scores, it is now 5-4.

Things still look good but Jay pops up for out number two. Up steps Marty: "Don't worry Pat, I'll get him in." Marty swings and hits a bomb deep to left that is run down, and just like that the ball game is over. We lose a heartbreaker 5-4

The boys played with a lot of guts today but we were missing three key players and in the final analysis that may have cost us.

Of the five runs scored by Greenbrier four again were unearned. "We just have to tighten up our defense," says Skip. "We are not catching the ball."

In the Managers show Skip went on to say that we just did not hit in the clutch, we left 10 men in scoring position today. "You just can't do that and expect to win," Skip went on.

Skip was asked if any changes are imminent. "I have no comment on that now but a meeting with my brain trust is scheduled for later tonight."

Today for the first time this season we felt the sting of defeat. Embrace the sting, a loss discarded with careless ease opens the door for other losses. Things got a little testy in the seventh when our battery mates could not get together on the signs, these things happen in the heat of the battle but things were brought quickly to order.

We are hopeful that Joe G. will have good news and be back with us on Thursday. Jerry (watching Picasso) is expected back any day. PPP is still on the 30 disabeled list but he attended today's game. He proved a team player by coaching third.

Pizza with anchovies, a little on the welldone side. Ah, what might have been. Tonight the flags at Esposito's fly at half mast...
