Court Tosses Out Former Southern Regional Student's Sex Abuse Claims

The woman - who claims she was abused by a faculty member - can't sue because the statute of limitations has run out, court rules.

A state appellate court has ruled that a former Southern Regional High School student who claims she was sexually abused by an assistant band leader years ago cannot proceed with her lawsuit because she filed it too late.

The woman - identified as J.P. - filed the suit in 2014 for the abuse she says occurred in 2000, according to nj.com.

The three-judge panel said the woman was not entitled to any exceptions to the statute of limitations because she knew about the sexual abuse and the emotional harm it caused her 16 years ago.

The woman said the district is responsible to the alleged abuse since it employed the faculty member. She claims she was abused on many occasions and some of the assaults occurred on school property and at out-of-state color guard competitions.

She said she only became aware of the abuse after she was treated by a psychologist in 2013. She was a 16-year-old junior when the abuse occurred and resulted in a pregnancy and an abortion, the suit states.
