The Barnegat primary race for the two available seats on the Township Committee would have been fairly routine, with no contests on either the Democratic or Republican sides.

But Republican voters cast 101 write-in votes, rather than go with Mayor Susan McCabe and running mate Frank Caputo. McCabe received 432 votes, Caputo received 438 votes, according to the Ocean County Clerk’s Office.

It was only six days ago that William Cox and Denise Pilovsky launched a write-in campaign for the Republican nomination for the two, three-year seats on the Township Committee.

Cox, 12 Herkimer Court, and Pilovsky, 26 Aphrodite Drive, have conducted their campaign largely through social media. Cox said Monday that no matter what the outcome of today’s primary is, the two will run as Independents in the general election in November.
