Frederick G. Voss Jr. Of Barnegat Light Dies At 80

Memorial service planned for a later date for longtime Barnegat Volunteer Fire Company member.

Frederick G. Voss, Jr., 80, of Barnegat Light passed away peacefully on November 26, 2015, after a brief and aggressive resurgence of cancer.

Born on March 3, 1935 to the late Helen E. and Fred G. Voss, Sr., Fred was raised in Philadelphia, but especially enjoyed summer vacations and other getaways in Ship Bottom and later in Barnegat Light.

Fred met the love of his life, June “Pat” Voss, at a high school graduation party, after which they dated. After his 3-year service in the US Army, their relationship was rekindled and they were married on September 20, 1958 in Tabor Lutheran Church by Pastor Schmidt. They soon moved into a home in the Bustleton section of Philadelphia, where they lived for 32 years. Fred and Pat worked hard and sacrificed to build a beloved beach home in 1975, to which they subsequently retired in 1995 and enjoyed their favorite place on Earth, Barnegat Light.

After his career in Philadelphia in the printing and publishing industry with WB Saunders and Waldman Graphics, Fred became an active member of his community enlisting with the Barnegat Light Volunteer Fire Company and organizing their annual t-shirt sales fund raiser.

Fred contributed his mechanical and technological talents and creativity in many ways such as being instrumental in the development of the town’s Office of Emergency Management and serving on the Open Space Committee. He also assisted with yard sale fund raisers at Zion Lutheran Church.

Fred was persistently appreciative of Pat’s artistic talents and her love of working with clay and potting. Fred considered himself extremely fortunate to share much of his retirement in the same town as his son, Matt. In recent years. Perhaps Fred was happiest working with ReClam the Bay, where he faithfully participated in maintaining Barnegat Light’s upweller (a nursery for cultivating bivalves) and he thrived by explaining to visitors and students how the clams, oysters, and bay scallops were being raised to help restore Barnegat Bay.

Fred is survived by his children: Christine Marie Voss and life partner Charles Peterson of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, and Matthew John Frederick Voss of Barnegat Light, NJ; and grandchildren: Chelsea J McDaniel and husband Jonathan McDaniel of Jacksonville, NC, and Benjamin James Maser of Pine Knoll Shores, NC. The family plans to hold a memorial service in Barnegat Light to celebrate Fred’s life.
