Freeholders Offer Verbal, But Not Financial Support For Surflight

County officials recently passed a resolution supporting efforts to reopen shuttered theater.

Although members of the Ocean County Board of Freeholders support efforts to reopen the landmark Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, it’s verbal support only, according to app.com.

Board members passed a resolution at a recent meeting acknowledging the theater’s rich cultural history and former Surflight’s artistic director Steve Steiner’s efforts to come up with a business plan to reopen it.

“Steve Steiner and the non-profit Ocean Professional Theatre Company seem to be the only viable option to maintain a professional quality theatre at the Surflight complex in Beach Haven,” the resolution states.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I regret to advise you that due to continuing difficult financial circumstances, Surflight Theatre is forced to cease operations after 65 seasons and file for bankruptcy,” said Dave Kreines in a message on the theatre’s website.
