Last Sunday, after church, my mother—Mama—and I did what so many families do this time of year. We went home, shared a meal, and headed out to grab a few things for Christmas dinner. Ham. Sides. Ordinary plans.

As we drove through Barnegat, approaching the intersection of West Bay Avenue and Barnegat Boulevard, something felt off. At Settlers Landing Plaza, a car sat with its entire front end crushed—completely gone. A tow truck was already there. I remember thinking, How did that happen right here?

Then I looked across the intersection. Police had blocked a lane. Another tow truck. Another car—this one turned in the opposite direction, immobile. Two separate accidents, in the same stretch of road, at the same time.

It wasn’t a headline. It wasn’t breaking news. It was real life—unfolding in front of us.

Mama began praying aloud in the passenger seat, asking God for protection from harm and danger. I joined her. In that moment, it hit me again—harder than any statistic ever could. This is why planning matters. Not “someday.” Not “when things slow down.” Now.
