Woman Killed, Child Shot By Man In South Jersey: Prosecutor

PAULSBORO, NJ — A 41-year-old was convicted after killing a woman and leaving a child hurt after a double shooting in Paulsboro, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said.

Ramon L. Acevedo, of Paulsboro, pleaded guilty on Monday to first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

On January 3, officers responded to a 911 call from Acevedo along Elizabeth Avenue for a woman who was shot in the head and a child who was also shot but had left the home.

Acevedo identified himself to officials during the call and said he shot them both, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Police found Hazel M. Santiago dead inside a bedroom.

Through a later admission, Acevedo told authorities that the shooting was part of an ongoing argument with Santiago.

He said he had been handling the gun in the hallway when he accidentally shot the child.

Sentencing is scheduled for November 17.

Acevedo faces a maximum of 30 years to life in jail for first-degree murder, five to 10 years for second-degree aggravated assault, and five to 10 years for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
