Jersey Shore Beaches Plan To Open Amid Coronavirus: Here's Where

It's not quite certain what the Jersey Shore will look like this summer. But more beaches are getting ready to open anyway. Here's where.

JERSEY SHORE, NJ — It's not quite certain how the Jersey Shore will look this summer. But more beaches are getting ready to open amid the new coronavirus (see list below).

Some may open by Memorial Day weekend or a little after, and several never even closed. Here are some recent updates around the Jersey Shore.

Gov. Phil Murphy extended New Jersey's public health emergency Wednesday another 30 days, to June 7. But Murphy has left beach closures, besides those in state parks, up to municipalities.   • Belmar says it's working with neighboring towns to develop a plan to open its beaches on Memorial Day weekend. Belmar Administrator Ed Kirschenbaum said "it's an impossibility to stop people" from going to the beaches, so his town is going to work to make sure the areas is managed as safely as possible.   • Lavallette reopened its beaches Wednesday for running, walking, fishing and sitting. But the boardwalk remains closed until further notice. Read more: Lavallette To Partially Open Its Beach
  • Long Branch closed its boardwalk, promenade and adjacent bike paths March 31 but will reopen these areas Saturday morning. The beaches have remained open. Read more: Long Branch Boardwalk Set To Reopen After Coronavirus Closure
  • Manasquan has introduced a "phased" beach reopening plan that will begin on Memorial Day weekend. Read more: Manasquan Introduces Beach Reopening Plan
  • Resident and homeowner placards are no longer necessary to enter Ship Bottom beaches as of Monday.
  • Seaside Park beaches reopened, but the boardwalk remains closed, the Borough announced Wednesday. Read more: Seaside Park Reopens Beach, Boardwalk Still Closed
  • Mayor Jay Gillian of Ocean City, Mayor Leonard Desiderio of Sea Isle City and Mayor Richard Palombo of Upper Township announced Saturday that they will allow access to their beaches for "exercise and active recreation." Some Cape May County towns — such as Wildwood, Avalon and Stone Harbor — have announced plans to reopen before June 1. Read more: Ocean City, Cape May County Beaches Open
  • Ortley Beach in Toms River will reopen to the public starting Saturday, May 9. The township will continue to enforce strict social distancing guidelines on its beaches. Beach access parking lots will also be open. The boardwalk and bathrooms will remain closed, officials said. Read more: Toms River Reopens Ortley Beach Amid Coronavirus Crisis
  • Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Paul Kanitra offered possible plans to allow the public back to the beach, the parks, the Manasquan Inlet and the downtown stores if New Jersey takes similar steps to reopen before Memorial Day. Kanitra says the community is looking at even taking steps to promote social distancing at the beaches if Point Pleasant Beach is able to take any steps toward reopening.   • Ventnor will reopen its beaches at sunrise Friday for passive recreation. Activities such as swimming, sunbathing, sitting and organized sports remain prohibited.
