Kim Invites Barnegat Light Coast Guardsman To State Of The Union

Eric Thornton led a rescue of a man attempting a transatlantic voyage during difficult conditions in June.

Congressman Andy Kim invited a Barnegat Light Coast Guardsman to President Donald Trump's State of the Union Address. Petty Officer and Manahawkin resident Eric Thornton will attend Tuesday night's address as Kim's guest, the congressman's office announced Monday.

Thornton gained notoriety in June for leading a rescue of a man attempting a transatlantic journey during difficult conditions, according to Coast Guard News. The crew rescued the man about 20 miles east of Barnegat Light amid 21-mph winds.

Thornton enlisted in the Coast Guard in 2011. He has achieved the qualification of Surfman, a level of expertise only obtained by about 500 other Coast Guardsman in the service's history.
