The Last Battle Of The Revolutionary War Re-enactment Slated For Sunday

"The Affair At Cedar Bridge" in Barnegat is free to the public.

Captain Richard Shreve of the Burlington County Light Horse and Captain Edward Thomas of the Mansfield militia decided to refresh themselves at a nearby tavern in the Barnegat woods on Dec. 27, 1782.

They had been searching for British Loyalist Captain John Bacon and needed a break.

But Bacon and his loyalists surprised them and blocked their escape. The militia gradually regained control, but were suddenly fired on by a group of loyalists, which allowed Bacon to escape. In the end, one patriot was killed and four were wounded. Four loyalists and Bacon were also wounded, according to the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission’s website.
