LBI Sea Glass Festival Aims To Break World Record

SHIP BOTTOM, NJ — Want to become a Guinness World Record holder? The LBI Sea Glass and Art Festival will give you the opportunity.

People on Long Beach Island will attempt to break the world record for most people simultaneously blowing conch shells. They need 350 participants to break the record.

LBI earned the world record in 2012, just before Superstorm Sandy. Participants in the Bahamas later took the record before festival goers made another attempt in 2017, Cheryl Kirby, Things A Drift owner told The Sandpaper. The record try, however, was disqualified since a few people in the vicinity of the contest weren't register.

So 2019's attempt will have some strict rules, according to welcometolbi.com:

• All participants must register.
• All must use only the Queen Conch (Lobatus gigas).
• Only registered participants with a Queen Conch in the official photo and video will be counted for the Guinness World Record.

The contest and the festival take place at Things A Drift (406 Long Beach Blvd., Ship Bottom). Registration for the record attempt runs from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday. The attempt will run from 3:45-4:15 p.m. in the designated area at Things A Drift.

This year, participants will play a short, six-note tune. Free lessons will be available. You can bring your own Queen Conch or purchase or rent one at Things A Drift (ID required for rental). You can purchase a conch now.
