Library to Host Historical Program on Unsung Hero of Civil War

Performer Lorraine Stone to bring to life the story of Mary Bowser, an African American woman who aided the north during the Civil War

The Barnegat Branch of the Ocean County Library will offer a program tonight on a black woman who became a key player in the north's victory in the Civil War.

Actor and Jersey native Lorraine Stone will appear at 7 p.m. as Mary Bowser, a freed slave who lived and worked at the home of a northern sympathizer in Richmond during the war. By being placed as a servant in the home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, she became a successful spy for the Union.

Barnegat head librarian Givane Hayes said Ocean County Library System arranged for Stone to visit several branches throughout February as part of its series of programs recognizing Black History Month.

"Because we have the ongoing Civil War discussions" – a book lecture series that runs through April 17 – "I thought it was perfect," Hayes said.

Stone, originally from Asbury Park, is a longtime area actor and has gained recognition for portraying other historical characters of African-American heritage, including Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. Hayes said her recent performances at other Ocean library branches have received rave reviews.
