Lighthouse International Film Society Announces Year-round Screenings & Entertainment- FALL SCREENINGS AND EVENTS
Lighthouse International Film Society will be hosting several film events throughout the fall season and into the Winter and Springtime.
The Lighthouse International Film Society is pleased to announce the fall lineup for screenings, Q and A with the filmmakers and special events. Everyone knows that the wonderful Lighthouse International Film Festival occurs in June on L.B.I. But film lovers on the island have been active all year long, bring interesting cutting edge films to the island to share along with Q&A's with the filmmakers. The group is called The Lighthouse International Film Society and interested people can join for $25.00 for the year. Membership affords free viewings of the films that are shown, Q & A's, snacks and camaraderie. You are welcome to come to any them and can often view these films for as little as $5.00/film.
First up for our Fall screenings will be George Tice: Seeing Beyond the Moment. George is an American photographer, best known for his meticulously captured and crafted black and white prints in silver gelatin and platinum, as well as his books, which depict a broad range of American life, landscape, and urban environment, mostly photographed in his native New Jersey, where he has lived all his life, except for his service in the U. S. Navy, a brief period in California. Q&A with filmmaker Bruce Wodder will follow the screening. November's Offerings will be two very diverse documentaries. The first one will be screened on November 12th. It is OUR VIEW OF VIETNAM.The filmmaker John Kurash will be present for a Q & A following the screening of the film."It's easier to start a war, than to fight it. We all know the story about Vietnam Veterans. Or do we? Soldiers share their personal journey of a very public war in this documentary." John Kurash is returning to LIFS with this film. Saturday November 26, 2016 we will be Screening- FIRE AND WATER-Q&A with filmmaker- director Thomas Brookins.FIRE AND WATER -. Does anyone know how long the sport of surfing has existed? There have been surfers in NY rumored as early as the 1800's. The film explores the surf culture and starts with New Yorker Don Eichin as a young man in 1957 traveling to exotic Hawaii to become a Merchant Marine. While working on a ship & exploring the waters of Honolulu, a young woman teaches him to surf. He is changed forever by his experience it leads him on a path modern surfers could only dream. Moving to the Banzai Pipeline & Filming his exploits as well as some of his friends who happen to be the biggest names in the history of the sport. Returning to NY in 1968, he becomes a firefighter & passes his knowledge onto others. Today his legacy continues in the NY firefighting and surfing cultures. Blending incredible archival surfing footage from Hawaii along with terrific storytelling; the film is a can't-miss for surfers and documentary fans alike.
