Live-In Caretaker Planned For Historic Site In Barnegat
The remote nature of Cedar Bridge Tavern, rumored to have held the last skirmish of the Revolutionary War, means it needs a caretaker.

BARNEGAT, NJ — County officials are planning to hire a live-in caretaker for one of its most historic sites.
Cedar Bridge Tavern in Barnegat, said to have been the location of the last skirmish of the Revolutionary War, needs a caretaker to serve as an additional resource for park visitors and provide supplemental security due to the park's "very remote location."
Or put more plainly, as Parks and Recreation Director Michael T. Mangum explained to officials according to the Asbury Park Press, they have had issues with couples taking advantage of the site at night to do "some sordid things."

The county Board of Commissioners approved a resolution at their latest meeting to create a policy to allow employees to live on county sites, outlining the rules and regulations for a live-in caretaker.
Commissioner Virginia E. Haines said that the caretaker will live in a 882-square foot apartment on the second floor of the public restrooms, in an outbuilding behind the tavern, according to the Asbury Park Press. It has a living room, kitchenette, bedroom and private bathroom.

According to the policy, the caretaker will get a 40 percent discount on the rental rate, based on its fair market rental value. They have a set of rules to follow as well.
"Managers/supervisors have a high stake in the reputation of Ocean County and success of the Parks Department and will make sound decisions," the policy reads.
Cedar Bridge Tavern sits on five acres in the Pine Barrens and offers a wealth of history. The building itself dates to around 1816, but the property itself was apparently the site of a Revolutionary War battle. Each year, the county commemorates this with a reenactment.
