Mario D'Ambrosio Of Ship Bottom Dies At 94

A private memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Mario D’Ambrosio, 94, of Ship Bottom, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, in Little Egg Harbor Township.

Mario was born in 1921 in Philadelphia, PA to an Italian immigrant tailor and his wife. He excelled at mathematics in school and eventually joined the Department of the Army just prior to World War II as a machinist’s apprentice at Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia.

He married Louise (nee Cerino) in 1943 and they raised three wonderful and successful sons, Joseph, Steven and Paul. The highlight of Mario’s career came in 1968 when he was tasked by the Department of Defense to travel to Thailand to help build the Thai small arms munitions plant in Bangkok.

Louise and a young Paul joined him in Bangkok the following year, where they lived until returning to the United States permanently in 1976. Upon his return, Mario worked at Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, New Jersey, as a contracting specialist, retiring in 1980. Mario worked part-time as a tailor on Long Beach Island and traveled extensively with his wife, Louise, across the United States and Europe until the early 2000s.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Louise; their three sons, Joseph, of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, and his wife, Nella; Steven D’Ambrosio, Ph.D., and his companion Anne Van Buskirk of Columbus, Ohio, and his two daughters, Michel and Cory D’Ambrosio; and Paul, his wife, Suzanne, of West Creek, New Jersey, and their two sons, Matthew and Adam.

Arrangements are being handled by Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, in Manahawkin. A private memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date for immediate family members.
