Peter Whitney Marshall, World War II Coast Guard Veteran, Dies at 95

Beach Haven man participated in Normandy landings and rescued many from Normandy Beach

Peter Whitney Marshall, age 95, of Beach Haven died on September 6, 2014 at Arcadia Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born in Beach Haven on February 18, 1919, he was a lifelong resident.

He served during World War II in the Coast Guard as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate First Class. He commanded an 83-foot Coast Guard Cutter and participated in the Normandy landings. They rescued and retrieved many sailors and soldiers from the waters off Normandy Beach. His boat was also involved in the sinking of a German U-Boat in the English Channel

When he returned home from the war, he went into the painting business, starting Marshall’s House Painting. Peter was a member of Masonic Lodge #286, enjoyed fishing and duck hunting and was an avid decoy carver later in life. The last two years of his life he resided at Arcadia Nursing and Rehabilitation in Little Egg Harbor where he received loving care.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Whitney C. and Helen Marie Marshall, two sisters, Leona Irwin and Dorothy Gray, and his wife of 65 years Kathryn “Kitty” (nee Sprague) of West Creek. Surviving are his two daughters and their husbands, Judy and George Binet of Cedar Run, Joyce and Harry Deverter of New Gretna, his son and his wife, Whitney and Diane Marshall of Beach Haven. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.

Cremation was private and under the direction of Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Ship Bottom. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Kynett United Methodist Church, 127 Centre Street Beach Haven, NJ 08008 in Mr. Marshall’s memory.
