MANAHAWKIN, NJ — The site of the shuttered Kmart in Manahawkin moved one step closer to opening for business. The Stafford Township Planning Board approved signage Aug. 26 for the site set to occupy new businesses.

The Kmart vacated the Manahawkin Commons property in 2017, and several plans have come and gone for which tenants might fill the space. New stores will include Burlington Coat Factory, Old Navy and Ross Dress for Less, according to Stafford Mayor Greg Myhre.

"The private sector continues to show confidence in Stafford!" Myhre wrote in a Facebook post.

Manahawkin 2015 LLC, which owns the property, applied for multiple variances for signage. The Planning Board's approval allows for the installation of 23 signs and removal of four.

The recently completed roadwork on Route 72 and closure of the access road next to the McDonald's prompted the proposal, The Sandpaper reported.
