UPDATED: Two Children Ejected from Minivan in Morning Crash

Two 4-year-old children were injured after they were ejected from the back of a minivan in a morning crash at the intersection of Route 9 and Barnegat Boulevard North this morning, police said. 

A Dodge Caravan driven by Travis McCurdy, 18, of Toms River was headed south on Route 9 at about 8:40 a.m. when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal at the intersection with Barnegat Boulevard North/Bayshore Drive, said Lt. Keith Germain of the Barnegat Township Police Department.

McCurdy’s vehicle entered the intersection and collided with a westbound Chevrolet Uplander minivan driven by Monica Villavicencio, 39, of Barnegat. 

The force of the crash caused Villavicencio’s two 4-year-old sons to be ejected through the rear window of the minivan, said Germain. The children had been unrestrained in the vehicle, he said.

The children could not be airlifted because of heavy fog conditions, but they were transported by Quality Medical Transport to Southern Ocean County Medical Center, where they are currently listed in stable condition, Germain said.

Neither driver was injured in the collision.

McCurdy was issued a summons for failure to observe a traffic control device, while Villavicencio was issued summonses for unlicensed driver and two counts of failure to use a child restraint, said Germain.
