Rep. MacArthur understands that Social Security and Medicare are promises to be kept

Newly elected Congressman made clear vital programs are on his priority list at recent AARP House Call event

As the Mt. Laurel AARP chapter President, I recently helped organize an AARP forum featuring our new Congressman, Representative Tom MacArthur as our guest. The forum—a town hall meeting, teleconference, and social media event hybrid of sorts—allowed attendees, listeners, and participants on the AARP NJ Facebook page, a chance to ask their Congressional representative important questions.

While Congressman MacArthur’s priorities lay with the armed services and national resources, Social Security and Medicare are very clearly on his radar too. I was struck by his commitments such as when he said “Social Security is a promise that must be kept; people have earned those benefits, and it’s incumbent on the federal government to make sure that we pay them.” Considering how many senior citizens rely on Social Security benefits alone, Congressman MacArthur’s stance on this issue is a welcomed one.

Let us, AARP volunteers and members, keep Social Security and Medicare a non-partisan issue. And let us work together to support our representatives’ efforts to preserve and strengthen Social Security and Medicare.
