Route 9 Resurfacing Continues

NJDOT contractor milling and repaving sections of the highway at the north end of the 11-mile project

The Department of Transportation's Route 9 resurfacing project is continuing after a summer hiatus, and an offical says the work, including an intersection improvement in Barnegat, is on schedule for completion this December.

Crews are currently milling and repaving lane sections at the northern end of the project in Lacey and Barnegat during overnight hours, said NJDOT spokesman Timothy Greeley. Any areas of the road that are milled overnight will be paved within as close a timeframe as possible to limit occurrences of grade-separation between the travel lane and the shoulder, Greeley said.

The Route 9 resurfacing project includes approximately eleven miles of Route 9’s north and southbound lanes, stretching from north of Route 72 in Stafford Township to north of Lakeside Drive in Lacey Township.

Work was temporarily stopped on the project in June, because the the NJDOT limited the amount of work done during the summer due to a rule that bans lane closures on Shore-area roads between May 15 and Labor Day.

Greeley said some accompanying improvements remain to be completed, including drainage repairs, electrical work at a few intersections and the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Route 9 and Barnegat Boulevard.

The contractor will also be upgrading guide rails and installing a new water main crossing in Barnegat, Greeley said.
