ORIGINAL STORY: Buckel made arrangements with family members and the New Jersey State Police to turn himself at the Forked River Rest Area around 11 p.m. on Sunday night, according to the Berkeley Township Police Department's Facebook page.

But he changed his mind and walked off into the night.

"The subject is believed to have initially moved north from the rest area on foot, but his movements thereafter are unknown," according to the Facebook post. "It is not known if he entered a vehicle at some point or is still moving on foot.

Exit 77 on the parkway is on the border of Double Trouble State Park in Bayville. The park contains thousands of acres of heavily-wooded land.

Video surveillance photos from the Forked River rest area show a now clean-shaven Buckel. He was last seen wearing a gray, long-sleeved sweatshirt, gray pants and work boots.

The search is being coordinated by the state Department of Corrections and the New Jersey State Police. A command post was set up at the Bayville Fire Department's substation. Berkeley and Lacey police have assigned additional officers to search for Buckel and guard local schools, the post said.

"Anyone who sees anything suspicious or believes they see Arthur Buckel should notify their local police department immediately," according to the post.

Lacey Police Chief David A. Paprota said the Lacey Township Police Department is assigning additional staff to the Mill Pond and Cedar Creek Schools along with extra patrols in the areas of concern for children at the bus stops.

"School personnel will be providing additional monitoring and supervision as well during the arrival of students," the chief said. "Parents are asked to take appropriate precautions while the children are at the bus stops."

Central Regional and Berkeley Township school districts sent out robo calls to parents early this morning apprising them of the situation.

Hundreds of police swarmed Barnegat earlier this week looking for Buckel, who escaped from Bayside State prison, stole a car, then abandoned it in Barnegat. The state Department of Correction is the lead agency on the investigation.
