Student Aims to Create Wall Honoring Military

Morgan Mitchell, a senior at Barnegat High School, addressed the Board of Education at last night's meeting

Morgan Mitchell, the Executive President of Barnegat High School's Student Government Association, told the Board of Education last night she has a desire to honor her family roots in the military and her friends who are currently serving.

"I've had friends who are in basic training right now, I have friends who have friends who are in basic training who have graduated, my grandfather was in the military, my grandmother was, and my family. We are just a very patriotic family," Mitchell said.

Mitchell, taking a cue from her father who is a 36-year veteran teacher at Jackson Memorial High School, is hoping, as her senior project, to create a wall within the high school to celebrate alumni who are serving their country.

Mitchell, who is currently applying to colleges such as University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Delaware, was inspired from visiting her father at work over the summer.

"I actually visited my dad's school, Jackson Memorial ... and he actually had helped the ROTC there help build the shelves and the frames," Mitchell said.

The wall would feature former student's military pictures, names, graduation years and branches of military.

James Mihalik, board member, and Lisa Becker, President of the Board, shared locations where to obtain information regarding past service members of the community who have attended Barnegat High School.

In other Board news, Superintendent Karen Wood noted the community should be aware that many of the polls for voting in November have moved around.

Scott Kiewe was also approved as 504 Coordinator, Homebound Coordinator and Homeless Liason for the 2012-2013 school year and 21 prior and new subsitute teachers have been approved for 2012-2013 school.
