Southern Air Force ROTC cadets will place 6,848 flags in front of school to honor Americans who had died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Southern Regional High School is once again planning a Memorial Day Field of Flags and ceremony to pay tribute to the military men and women who have given their lives in service to our country.
Members of Southern's Air Force Junior ROTC cadets will begin placing 6,848 flags on the field in front of the high school on May 26 to honor all service people who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, said district spokesperson Marilyn Dougherty.
"Unfortunately, this number is 6,848 to date and could rise," she said.

"The community is invited to attend this ceremony. The hope is that the Stafford community as well as the student body will begin the holiday weekend fully realizing the purpose behind the holiday," Dougherty said.
The flags will remain in place through the holiday weekend. The ceremony will be held in the school auditorium in case of inclement weather, she said.
