Stafford Mayor Defends Calling For Probe Into Identity Theft

Police Chief, Prosecutor's Office says mayor within his rights calling for investigation.

Mayor John Spodofora steadfastly maintains that he did nothing wrong calling for a police investigation into a bogus Facebook page bearing his name created by Earl Galloway, a retired Navy officer who accused the mayor of ”stolen valor” during the Vietnam War, according to an article in The Sandpaper.

Ultimately, the three-month investigation did not find enough evidence to support an identity theft charge. However, the probe went beyond the phony Facebook page. When the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office issued subpoenas, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service became involved, the story states.

The NCIS found files on Galloway’s government computer dealing with his efforts to discredit Spodofora. Spodofora contends Galloway’s use of a government computer for personal and political efforts is improper.
