Township Committee Okays Another Floor For Barnegat Crossings

Officials change the land-use ordinance for mixed-use buildings in neighborhood commercial zone.

BARNEGAT — Going up?

The developers of Barnegat Crossings - a mixed use, commercial-residential complex already under construction on Lighthouse Drive - will now be able to build to four stories instead of three, according to app.com.

The Township Committee approved a change to the land-use ordinance at the March 1 meeting. The vote was four to zero, with Mayor John Novak abstaining.

Novak formerly did work as an attorney for Cardinal Enterprises - Barnegat Crossings' developer - before he became mayor.

Novak said the project will relieve traffic and called it a "win-win-win."

"The township gets a ratable," he said. "We bring jobs into town... and we provide a residential experience that's very convenient for the necessities of life."

The height limitations of the project will remain at 48 feet, despite the additional floor, according to the ordinance.

"How can you now put a four-story structure in the same height as a three-story structure?" resident Bill Cox asked.

The design must still comply with the building height requirements, officials said.
